    RAM query

I just came into a nice tax rebate (yay me), so I decided to get myself an early christmas present and RAM is really the one thing I've needed to upgrade for quite a while, and although I'm reasonably tech savvy, RAM is not my strong point, so I was hoping one of you could point out a good option for me.

I have an ASUS P5k mobo (ASUSTeK Computer Inc.), and I'd be looking for at least 4gb (running Win7 64bit), but considering how cheap RAM is nowadays, I wouldn't mind 8gb. I realise it's getting a touch old nowadays, but I can't really afford to rep the whole system, so just looking for a RAM upgrade.

Feel free to give me American links, or just names, I can look them up on UK sites.

At the moment, I'm looking at something like this -

    Scan.co.uk: Corsair Memory XMS2 Dominator 4GB DDR2 PC2-8500 (1066) Dual Channel Desktop - TWIN2X4096-8500C5D (x2).

    Any comments welcome

Looks as good as anything else I could find for you... I'd much prefer two 4GB sticks over 4 2GB sticks, but it appears the UK has a shortage of them.

Krakkens and shit. stop tempting them.

You don't need more than 4 GB for gaming. If you are going to be running dozens of browsers and several applications, then 8GB would be worth it... but you won't see any performance gains in games going from 4GB to 8 GB.

    Re: RAM query

Be careful, the ASUS mobos of that generation are notorious for not being able to use the Enhanced Performance Profiles, I have that ram with a similar mobo (the only difference is that mine has an NV750i northbridge) and getting the ram running at PC8500 was like pulling teeth.

You don't NEED 8 gb... but you can never have too much. Period.

My machine idles using 5.2GB. Running a game I can hit 7. Yes, I'm running a browser with 20 tabs open most of the time... And steam is always open... and I might have a dev environment open too... And I'm running a Server2008R2 virtual machine 24/7... But it's GREAT thing to be able to do that and not have to worry about having to close down half of it to start a game too.

Indeed. I tend to do a lot of multitasking when I'm on the computer.
