Overclocking....help?

So I really want to overclock my cpu from 2.8 to around 3.6, but I'm not really sure how to do it. I have tried scouring google for a guide that would simplify things for me, but none of them are really step-by-step. Is there anyone who could PM me with some help by chance?

Here are my specs in case you need them.

CPU - i7-930 @ 2.8
RAM - 3x2GB DDR3-1600 G-Skill ( Also, these sticks are only running at 1333. Anyone know why this is?)
MOB - P6X58D-E

Over-clocking can be a fairly in depth process depending on where you want to go with it. And although the results can be achieved with some rigid processes of trial and error, each set of hardware will produce difference results and require different settings. That is part of the reason why it is not as strait forward as you would expect.

If you are beginner and simply want to push your processor frequency up, since you have an ASUS board, you may want to try a simple tool in the BIOS under Jumperfree config, AI overclocking, OC Profile. This is hit or miss for most, but there are various profiles for stable boosts in performance. This will give lesser results, but may be able to achieve higher proc frequency near 30% (as you are looking for)

However, if you are looking to do some serious tweaking things to research and consider are:
Using your BIOS to OC.
Temperature. Do you have stock heat-sink, or after-market. This can make a big difference on the temperature risks you are taking
FSB clock speed and multipliers. Locked multipliers, chipset capabilities, etc.
CAS latency and memory bandwidth.
Voltages. Capacity of your board, tolerance for your components.

your better off overclocking your gpu(s), than you are your cpu. Unless your playing games like supreme commander. Plus a little gpu overclocking goes A LONG way (100-400 processors on your gpu, to your cpus 1-4(8v)).

But if your dead set on overclocking your cpu, read up on some articles regarding overclocking methodologies, before you actually start anything:

then when your set youll want to actually look up guides specifically for your mobo (and preferably cpu)

2.8 GHz to 3.6 GHz will also make a pretty noticeable difference in modern games. The trick is patience. It takes some time to fine balance your memory and CPU clocks, as well as the voltags/temps and tests for stability.

The first step should be to read the manual to your motherboard and get familiar with your BIOS.
