Windows Home Server - can it do this?

I just bought a really nice APC UPS that I can plug my server and 2 other computers into. What I want to do is if there is an extended power outage, I'd like my WHS machine to remotely shut down my other 2 computers and hibernate or shut down itself. Anyone know if that is possibly based on the status of the UPS?

I don't have a WHS, so no experience there, but I have a UPS at work. It has software and a USB cable for monitoring status and shutting down the PC. Did yours have that stuff? Couldn't you just connect all your stuff and let the software do the hibernate/shutdown for you?

nsRaven is right, you do not need the WHS for that. I do not think it could do it anyways. You may be able to write a script that could be triggered off of the switchover to UPS and run that from the WHS, but you could just use the software that came with the UPS to do the same thing far easier. But if you are using one UPS to run all the computers you may not be able to do that on all of them.... Perhaps a script is what you need after all.

My WHS setup doesn't have that option. Typically that scenario is handled by the UPS not the server.

you can definitely do a remote shutdown from a machine though.

    SHUTDOWN /s /m \\computername

And most ups software lets you run a program at a certain battery percentage... So if you wanted to centralize... you could install the ups software on one machine... and a .bat file to shut down all other machines.

Short answer. Yes. But it doesn't need to be a "server".

Krakkens and shit. stop tempting them.

just make a script like what Kanati said and make it a shutdown script on the computer that has the UPS software on it. Then if the UPS shuts down that computer, its shutdown script will shut down the other PCs too.
