Yeah, I think MC is selling the 950 at break even or maybe as a loss-leader to try and get people to build their computers from them. It's rather bizarre...

I wonder why NewEgg is so much higher? They have always been a little more than MC on the processors....but $70?! WTH?
I knew I could count on my family. I have to get approval from the wife first, so I will let you guys know.

It's been that way for 2 years. I bought my 920 D0 (still a champ!) there in 2009 for $200 when everywhere else online was selling for $290. Tax takes away some of that discount though.

Tax & Shipping are often a wash when comparing prices local vs online. Sure, Newegg has a lot of stuff with free shipping, but the stuff that does cost to ship, their prices are a bit... out there, especially for UPS 3-Day Ground. That being said, MicroCenter has consistently had their processors cheaper than Newegg. Their CPU/Motherboard bundles are almost always a good deal if you're looking to build a cheap system. Using a bundle and some donated parts, I built my brother-in-law a gaming rig capable of running what he wanted (WoW and BF2) all the way dialed up for about $300. Fry's sales are often better than what Newegg has to offer as well.

Re: Plotting a late Christmas build

You could also switch it up to a Sandy Bridge i7 proccessor:

Micro Center | 2nd Generation Intel Core Processors

You'd have to get a different (and likely slightly more expensive) mobo. I don't know if it is really worth the extra money, the i7-950 is a really sweet CPU and I don't think you are the kind of person who is going to be wanting to overclock your CPU to 7 Ghz just because you can...

Toms has a good write up of what the Sandy Bridge has to offer though: Intel's Second-Gen Core CPU's: The Sandy Bridge Review
