Um... did you not activate your copy of Windows? Is it not legit? Typically, when you run Windows Update, you will need to validate your copy of Windows.

Re: So I log onto computer for first time tonight and
Yes, was active. I don't use unlicensed OS software. Last thing that happened the night previous was installed updates and then shutdown. Powered up last night and got the warning that the OS failed the Genuine check.
Fixed it late last night after giving up on M$ answering the phone or start the support chat
These were the steps that I tried after finding them buries in a forum on social.msdn
Click the Start button and type "%windir%\system32"
Find cmd.exe in the folder that opens
Right-click on cmd.exe and select "Run as Administrator"
Type "net stop slsvc" at the Command Prompt to stop the software licensing service
then type "Cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Ro aming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing"
Next, you'll need to rename the tokens.dat file by typing "Ren tokens.dat tokens.old"
Type "cd %windir%\system32" to go back to the sys32 directory
Type "net start slsvc" to restart the software licensing service
Then type "slmgr.vbs -rilc" this might take a few moments to complete (took about 35 seconds on my machine)
Restart the PC
Login (validation still not there)
Restart again
Login
Voila - validation restored.
