Free Voice Comms out there? Anyone tried GSC?
Hey guys, back with another random question.
For some time I have been looking for a free voice comm system that I could use to talk to multiple people at once. Right now I have a few people that I have introduced to TF2 and in attempting to "mentor" them I like to keep up a running commentary about tips or tricks they can use. Well if there is more then one of them playing on the server I am confined by Steam's friends voice chat to talk to only one of them, since I'd rather not talk to a whole server.
So, obviously there's a bunch of free to download voice comms like ventrillo, mumble and teamspeak, but they all require you to pay in order to host a chat channel.
Long story short, while trying to solve my problem last night I ran across this program GSC...
getgsc.com
...that seems to do exactly what I want. It allows me to download and host for free my own voice chat channels. It even allows up to 200 people in my channel, although I don't need nearly that many slots. It also has the familiar IM thing with friends and regular text chat too that lots of programs have built in now.
I was wondering if ya'll had heard of this program or ever used it. I am almost suspicious that it is too perfect and am wondering what the catch might be, especially since I have used various voice comms in the past but never heard of this one. Haven't had a chance to try it in-game yet so dunno how it might affect my ping, but theoretically the program is designed specifically with in-game chat in mind.
In any case, thought some of you might be interested in this program, especially if you are thinking of trying to do more organized play in TF2 or other games and didn't want to spring for a vent server. Does anyone have any other free voice chat program they like for talking to multiple people?Last edited by DrHaphazard; 01-25-11 at 10:40 PM.

You can run a free ventrillo server that has max players capped. But you need to install a dedicated server and open ports on your router.
Moved to PC hardware and technology.Last edited by insanegammer109; 01-25-11 at 11:26 PM.

The one I have installed on my old PC has been on there for awhile, I never run it anymore.
We used a home run Vent server back when we had a DoD:s OGL team, so you have been able to host one for as long as I can remember.Last edited by insanegammer109; 01-25-11 at 11:34 PM.

Ah I see, thanks again insane. Unfortunately I am unable to mess with my router settings, I guess due the fact that I live in an apartment building and the building's service provider doesn't want people messing with their network. Already annoyed because I can't host a private tr_walkway_rc in order to show my friends how to work on their aim.
In any case, a few seconds of google has rendered another vent solution. Apparently some generous souls are offering their unused slots to all comers. If anyone's interested...
Free Ventrilo Servers

I am sure there's more but I gotta get back to my reading. Thanks again insane, I will talk to yall later.

Klutch uses Mumble a lot. I don't know if servers are free.
