You could probably get away with a smaller power supply. Unless he is planning on going SLI and adding a ton of extra hard drives.
I'm running a very similar system with an 800 watt power supply. Newegg.com - COOLER MASTER Silent Pro Gold Series RS800-80GAD3-US 800W ATX 12V v2.3 / EPS 12V v2.92 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Yes, you would need a triple channel kit. I recommend going with the GTX 560ti or the AMD 6950 1GB card. Both cards are superior to the GTX 460 and only cost about $50 more.
Those WD Black 640 GB drives are great. They have 2 x 320 GB platters and perform very well. I have two of them in RAID 0.
It should be a nice build when he is done.

Newegg.com - LG Black 24X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 16X DVD+R DL 24X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM SATA DVD Burner - Bulk - CD / DVD Burners
I've got a "Lite-on" drive = very noisy. That LG is quieter & has faster speeds too.
Newegg.com - G.SKILL PI 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL6T-6GBPI
6-8-6-20 = alot more responsive computer.Last edited by stuntmanSLim; 02-07-11 at 07:41 AM.
