    Post Graphic engine debate

Well I've been wondering this alot theres 4 top graphic engines out there
    Unreal Epic studios
    Crytek Crytek
    ID ID software
    Frost byte DICE

My question is if you were going for a great FPS gaming weather effects destuction and all around good design of lighting and materials what would you prefer...

So what does everyone think what engine is top dog, what engine is cheap, what engine is good for mediocre to the the machine of Wile E Coyote*LOL*.... And what engine just not worth the time to play on or create games....

None of those are cheap to license. At all. Best of them would either be crytek or frostbyte 2 in my opinion.

If you are looking for something for indie development, depending on what language you use there are tons out there. One of the most popular is free. Look into Ogre and the derivatives of it.

Krakkens and shit. stop tempting them.

CryEngine 3 is the way to go, thats my professional opinion.

no source. You need source to do any serious dev, i cant comment on the cost of licensing CryEngine or Unreal Engine unfortunetly, bound by nda.

yes it is free but after you make a certain amount you have to pay royalties/license.
for indie the UDK is great. you can do most everything in the editor without needing other programs. its also much easier to import models/textures/animations than really any other development kit.

frostbyte engine has impressed me quite a bit and i dont know much about cryteks engine.
personally i think valve is lagging behind in purely graphics, hopefully they come out with something big soon.
id tech 5 engine looks great... mainly because the software tools look very easy and intuitive. look up some demos on youtube.

    Re: Graphic engine debate

I'm putting Cry engine in the #1 slot and frostbyte #2 but after seeing the frostbyte 2 engine at the top of its game on bf3 in GDC I was quite stunned by the looks and gameplay of it. I might have to reconsider what is the top dog and what is second because BF3 won me over and I'm going to be upgrading my rig to full specs this year.
