For gaming, you don't really need Hyperthreading on. I keep my Hyperthreading on because I use my machine for folding and video encoding. There are other applications that take advantage of Hyperthreading, but for gaming, you are likely fine keeping it off if your temps are out of control. I get about 10 deg C difference when I turn mine off. Gaming is still mostly GPU dependent.
If you don't have an aftermarket cooler, you might want to consider investing in one. This way you can keep Hyperthreading on while things stay cooler.

Just re-read your original post and saw you already have the Zalman cooler. When you say "better temps", what are the temps at load with HT on vs off?
