    Cable Modem / Router Issues

I have a Cisco Cable modem, provided by Time Warner Cable. I have a Linksys wireless router, mine. Everything worked great until I went out of town this last weekend. Came home, no net.... Did all the basic things I could think of, reset each, plug modem in, wait till it boots, plug router in boot.

Long story short, I can plug my PC straight into my modem, works great. If I plug it into my router, nada. The router can not obtain an IP address... it just gets a 192. #......

Is my router dead? Is my modem being a jerk?
    Ideas?

    Thanks.....

192 is the beginning octet for your internal network (as far as the router sees it). Typically the default IP address for the first device connected to the router, is 192.168.1.1. Second one is 192.168.1.2, etc. When you connect the router, try going to your url bar and type in 127.0.0.1 I think it is. That is the default IP address to configure the router settings. (I could be wrong on the address though). See if you can connect to that. If you can't, I would hazard a guess that the router may have died, which doesn't happen often. How old is it?

visit the router manufacturers website and check for a firmware update. Second, can you log into the router? Have you tried to do a factory reset on the router? You can google "reset xxxx model xxx router" and you will find instructions on factory reset but typically its a matter of pushing in button on teh back with a paperclip and power it on with the button pressed in but some models are different. If you can get into the router then the routers interface is working. Update the firmware. That fixes the majority of the problems. If you can't log into it, the factory reset on the device doesn't work then its dead and buy a new one.

Yeah I can log into it. 192.168.1.1 The UI comes up fine, and I do the DHCP release / Renew Thing... thats when it obtains the 192..... as the internet IP.. usually it gives me a regular (internet connected) IP. I tried pushing the button in the back, it did give me a reset as I lost my wireless settings and such.

I'll try the firmware update, but I did update it about a year or so ago and its a fairly old router.
Thanks for the help and if you have anymore ideas, post em!

    LIES!!!!! :P :P

192.anything except for 168 is a public ip

When you did the dhcp release renew was that on the router?

Have you tried to unplug your router reset your modem then plug the router back in?

You need to make sure you have nothing plugged into the router when you do this. There are some instances in which the cable modem wont assign an ip if there are multiple dhcp requests... You need to make sure your router is the only one requesting...

Get your ip setting from the pc while plugged directly into cable modem by entering ipconfig /all at the cmd line. Write them down, now plug the router into cable modem and try to statically enter the ip info into your wan settings of the router. By the way what is the address the cable modem is handing out? If it is a private address you probably don't need a router.
