Now I wonder, is it more efficient for me to run all four cores doing one project, or each core doing it's own thing(or maybe two cores at a time).

I don't know if this guy knows what he's talking about, but it wasn't refuted in the forums at the time he said it:

if you have a 4 core CPU you should be running the SMP client. this will use all 4 cores to process one work unit. it is far more efficient than using one CPU core each to run 4 uniprocessor clients.

Switching to the large work units increases your point output per work unit quite a bit. Almost doubled for me.

SMP console client is how I maintain my high point rate.

Yes, recommended. Also, applying for and utilizing a Passkey is supposed to get you bonus points on some work units.
