Yes there are alternative drivers out there that purport to be better performing than the ATI drivers. I used to use them both for nvidia and ati. Sometimes you'd see a few frames per second faster speeds... and sometimes you wouldn't. While I never had any issues using them some people did. It's a use at your own risk type thing. If you aren't comfortable rummaging around in registry and removing drivers by hand in case something goes pear shaped... then don't use them.

I thought drivers like he was describing are a thing of the past? I used non-ATI drivers for my laptop ATI X600 a few years back. That was because the laptop drivers were so very very very poor.
OmegaDrivers.net. It looks like they are still updating them on a regular basis at the website. The kicker was that it was great for getting oblivion to run on my laptop at the time and was a noticeable performance increase. But it absolutely did not work with Maya (3D model/animation software).
