05-02-11, 11:01 PM #1Root
Does anyone know about something called Root? I'm not exactly sure what it is (compiler, OS, etc.). My research advisor is going to start me off writing macros in it this summer.

root is the master accound on any UNIX or UNIX like system. You are allowed to do anything, even delete all the files on the machine. It is very powerful, sudo was created to at least mitigate the damage a inexperienced admin can do, but you have not truly become a unix admin until you have typed:
# rm -rf /
while tired one night as root, and learned that terrible lesson. If you go into the root account, the road to hell is paved with good intentions and coffee and sleep deprivation.
