... serve as portable drives as well? I know you are simply only removing the jump drive from the equation which may seem silly but if you connected USB to USB between a desktop and a netbook, can you look at the files on your netbook from your desktop?

Yeah, you can connect two computers with USB (called bridge/bridging) but need special cable. Here is a site that explains and walks you thru step by step...

Why, not create a file share on your "C" drive and set hosting permission who can access it on your work group. Then you can access files via "Wifi, internet, mycomputer etc.."...

Depending on what you are needing it for you could also use a service like dropbox.

Dropbox is great. For anything I need to share between PCs on any sort of regular basis, I use Dropbox.
