Q about OC, Mobo and Usb ports
Ive been having some intermittent issues with my comp for a while but its never been super serious so I havent worried about it too much.
I currently have an i7 OC'd to 3.6 w/ 2x gtx 275's in SLI with about 3 internal HD and 2x DVD drives. Intermittently, the computer decides not to post at 3.6 when starting up, but simply entering the bios, saving settings and re-posting works fine to get it to post. I have found that having less USB devices connected pretty much prevents this from happening (esp not having any external HD connected). So my question is do I have a faulty USB port, a Bios issue, or am I not running enough power? I have an 850W psu. Let me know what you guys think.

For 3.6, likely on the CPU voltage may need to be bumped a little bit. What are the other specs for your system?
Also, tell us about your PSU. It could be failing or under-powered for all of the devices you have installed on your rig.
On occasion, I get the "Overclocking has failed" message and have to go into BIOS, save, and everything is fine.Last edited by HeavyG; 05-27-11 at 08:24 AM.

Re: Q about OC, Mobo and Usb ports
Also, overclocked processors require significantly more wattage than running standard. You might have an issue with startup power.... all devices (hard drives, disc drives, video cards... etc.) use a large amount of power to startup.
Your system is most likely starved on boot when it has been turned off for too long. A solution to this is getting a larger amperage on your PSU.
A general rule of thumb is to get a PSU that is over-powered for your computer so that it is only supplying 50-70% capacity. This way you will have higher power efficiency, be able to supply a spike in power required, and last longer when the power supplied reduces due to age.-- Intentionally Left Blank --

Re: Q about OC, Mobo and Usb ports
I would have to turn it off and go into bios to get the numbers, its been so long since ive acutally done the overclocking. I feel like the OC is very stable as is (i have my volts bumped a tad i know for sure). So Im really leaning towards it being a power issue. If thats what my problem is I need to decide if I should ditch the 275's for lower power GPU's or if I should bite the bullet and get a 1000W PSU. I dont really have the money for either at the moment but thats where I stand. LOL!

Re: Q about OC, Mobo and Usb ports
Aida64 will tell you everything,no need to go into bios. AIDA64 | PC Benchmark | System Diagnostics | Network Inventory (Extreme edition 1.70.1400)
How to find volts in Aida64 > motherboard > bios ?
How to find temperatures > computer > sensor ?
How to find memory speed > computer > overclock > cpu speed(second column) > memory bus ?Last edited by stuntmanSLim; 05-28-11 at 09:45 AM.

Re: Q about OC, Mobo and Usb ports
My OC is stable. Im sure of that. Ive tinkered with CPU volts and changing that higher or lower doesnt affect this problem. This is related almost exclusively to the number of USB devices I have connected. I dont know if its the number of devices or specific ports, possibly a little of both. Im leaning towards a shortage of overall power as opposed to a problem w/ individual component bios settings.
