    What is your CPU?

I did a quick google search for 8800GT and saw this:
8800GT Fan Speed bios update (akimbo)

Seems there is a fan speed issue with the cards. The fan speed wont go over 30%. You might want to check to see if you are capped at 30%.

Also I think you should take others' suggestions and use that MSI Afterburner. I have heard nothing but great stuff about it. It doesn't matter who made your video card, it will work. It should let you create a profile that will ramp up fan speed in relation to temperature. I would try to keep your GPU temp below 70c.

    GPU & CPU plz
CPU, I don't recommend above 70*C, well that's what Intel recommends though. Lots of people say you can go over 75*C when you're stressing since the 1st gen i7's got really hot.

Nvidia says the 9800GT can get up to 105*C but I don't recommend going above 80*C.

    Re: Monitor PC Temps?

I don't like it when my CPU breaks 70*C. As Shinobi stated, the Core i7 CPUs are notorious for running hot when you have hyperthreading enabled. I try to keep my temps between 60-65*C when stressing with Prime95. Since I water cool, it really depends on my ambient temps. If it is 73*F in my office, my stress temps are usually below 60*C, but when it is upwards of 80*C in my office, I will start to run high 60*C range... sometimes even 70*C when at 100% load.

GPUs can run much hotter, although since mine are water cooled, GPU 1 typically runs at 55*C max and GPU 2 runs at 65*C max, all with a 30% overclock. Prior to water cooling, it was not a rare thing to see my GPU temps in the 80-90*C range when playing GPU intensive games like Mafia II with PhysX enabled. I would need to crank the fans to 100% to keep things cool.

    Ouch! :-p

My results (i7 920 @ 3.8ghz HT on) mirror yours and I am only air cooled. Since I use EIST, I rarely ever top high 40's or low 50's on my cpu core in real usage... though stress testing on a hot day might get me close to 70c.

Breaking 4.0 GHz requires a bit more voltage. Hitting 4.2 GHz or higher on the first gen i7s requires some higher voltage and is really tough to keep cool on air.

I typically run high 50s to low 60s when at 100% stress.

Yeah, I consider that extra juice needed for 4+ as diminishing returns. I am by no means an oc freak, this was the first cpu I oced in a decade and only because it was so damn simple (only voltage I changed was ram). The extra overhead needed (including much higher power draw at the wall) for another 5% performance gain that I'd never even see in the real world... wasn't worth it to me.

    Re: Monitor PC Temps?

My i7 has been staying at 36-38 under light/idle use. Seen a few 40s and hit 50 when running vantage. I think the fan speed must kick up when it hit 50 because it dropped quick as soon as the benchmark was done running. I have heard of some big overclocks on the second gen i7s, but having never overclocked, I dont think I will try. Maybe at quakecon I can get some lessons.
