    Re: Upgrade

    I disagree.

    Battlefield 3 system requirements - Battlefield 3

His CPU is better than the minimum (but not the recommended). And having run a 560ti on a dual core 2.8ghz AMD that is about as powerful as his current CPU, I can say that it will perform just fine; as I imagine most cards would.

BF3 requires an 8800 (or what ATI's minimum DX10 card is) and a dual core 2.0 Ghz minimum. And it's recommended specs aren't as demanding as I thought they would be; certainly not making this system obsolete. Actually, your rig can run BF3 right now according to their site.

Would rather have a quad core though ... Maybe get a new GPU and a quad core? (if you can find one reasonably priced for your legacy socket).

I am not going off of what DICE recommends. I am going off of real tests and results. The Dual Core systems are just not cutting it.

Battlefield 3 Alpha Testing - GPU & CPU - AnandTech Forums

Check out the difference in performance between the dual core and quad core CPUs.

    Don

This article links to the same test results, but the according to the author "Battlefield 3 Alpha really looks as if it appreciates four or more cores thumbing its nose at all the dual core offerings tested". So not to give you the raspberry, Soy, but even the recommended settings are likely going to make the game just hardly playable. As for the graphics cards "to expect a smooth experience at 1080p you should anticipate having a GTX 460 or Radeon 5830 as your minimum and a GTX 560 Ti or a Radeon 6950 if you want to hover at around 60 FPS".

Dual core CPUs need not apply for Battlefield 3, so everyone be prepared to dig into your wallets and upgrade into a decent quad core system if you really want playable frame rates. The dual core CPUs tested were lucky to hit 30 FPS max.

Eek! Those graphs freak me out man!

That is sad looking; but I take heart in a couple of things. The data is based off graphs that were posted by a Russian website in violation of the NDA ... while truthful, it reminds us this is from alpha testing and several people note the game does not even support SLI yet as well as other graphics features and misc features ... clearly they still have some optimizing to do. Also, the average gamer is using a dual core, so if they lock out that user, or base the game on the newest of the new in terms of GPU's they will lose many potential buyers. But in the end that is ugly (and empirical) data that gives cause to worry the posted minimums are off.

Hopefully the beta will show some improvement. I am curious to see how my DDR2 system runs with it and this 560ti ... just for kicks I was going to run with a quad for a few and switch to dual and see what happens. But in the end, I do agree I think it is time for most people to start going quad core.
