Cyclic Redundancy Check Error Hard Drive

Has anyone had any luck recovering a HD that has this error come up? (Error: Cyclic Redundancy Check Error)

A friend's laptop crashed yesterday and we can't get it to boot at all. I removed his hard drive and put it in my PC to see if I can read any of his data files (pic's, music, documents etc.) and I can read most of them but some I cannot. I've tried to transfer them all to my back up hard drive and many of the files transfer but with others I get the error message below. I'm guessing the hard drive is corrupted or damaged somehow? My PC is running XP and his hard drive is Vista, does that have something to do with it? All I want to do is backup/recover his data, because he's never backed that stuff up. Any tricks to do this or programs to help?

I was actually going to mention Spinrite first (https://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm) and I noticed the first link mentions it, too. Spinrite's an $89 program that can often recover everything from a bad hard drive (at least long enough to allow a backup). It has a 30 day money back guarantee, so if it doesn't work, you're not out anything. I'd try the free options mentioned in the article above, and, if those don't work, let your friend decide if his files are worth $89. Good luck.

Thanks for the info Viktor_Olin. As far as we can tell it looks like his hard drive has damage to it, so after much discussion, he's going to take it to a place in town that will get the files for him for around $50-$75. Hopefully he'll get all of his data from the HD. A hard lesson on backing up your files.
