Intel Hyperthreading

Do any of you have the Hyperthreading turned off for gaming?

Why would you do that? Any properly programed game uses hypethreading, if it is multithreaded. No I do not turn it off.

The only benefit to turning off hyperthreading is that it does reduce heat and requires less voltage for stability. I can hit 5.0 GHz on less volts with hyperthreading turned off. At that same voltage with hyperthreading on, I only get about 4.6 GHz stable.

OCers will turn HT off, because of the heat impact. any background app w/HT will steal cycles, simply because windows sees it as using a seperate core. HT causes more heat, IME HT will slow framerates in game. also I couldnt find any games that say HT is supported directly, other then thou the OS, in which case its not the game using HT its your machine's operation.

but theres alot of Voodoo on this subject, just google hyperthreading+games

Yeah, hyperthreading is OS transparent, so if it is multithreaded it usually takes advantage of HT. As for the heat you are right but usually you can still get a decent OC with HT on. Also HT is great for encoding video and other stuff not in games. In all honesty though unless you are benchmarking your not going to notice the difference between HT being on and HT being off. The games that utilize the most CPU are BC2 and BF3 and they only use about 50% of the CPU time on a quad core HT machine.

I keep it on because a) I fold almost all day and b) I do a lot of video transcoding and hyperthreading makes a big difference.

As for overclocking, once you are at 4.5 GHz, you are pretty much at the point of diminishing returns. I don't notice any difference in my games when I go from 4.5 to 5.0 GHz. Now 4.0 to 4.5 GHz is a different story... After that, any real gains are going to be GPU dependent.

+1 after 4.5GHz its mainly about fucking up the scores on Futuremark ORB.
