are the same drive......

Are you sure? My understanding is that those drives might have the same label inside the casing, but don't actually have a cache or the same controller card.

I have 2 of them in my computer right now. I am sure they are the same. performance is equal to the other caviar black I have installed.

Though your millage will vary, I am not guaranteeing it will be, just saying the chances are good.


With how expensive hard drive prices are, a 2 TB for 179 is worth the risk, even if it has no cache.....

The other problem you face is you void your warranty removing them from the enclosure. The HD manufacturers know which drives are used in external enclosures. I got bit by this several years back. But again, YMMV.
