Home Audio Receiver, Center Channel Hum/Buzz'ing.

My dvd player/5.1 surround crashed. I replaced it with a blu-ray player and old reciever Sherwood RD-7500.

Basicly, I hooked up all the old speakers to the Receiver, plus upgraded to a powered sub. The problem is with the center channel speaker has a humming/buzzing coming out of it as long as the receiver is on.

Every speaker I connect to the center channel has the humming. I finally unhooked everything and plug in just the center channel and the receiver into another outlet. Still humming without anything connected even while muted or no volumn.

Figure I need a new reciever.

Sounds like you need a new receiver.

But, to be sure I would move some stuff around and see if anything is causing distortion. If the speakers are not shielded very well or not at all that might be a problem. Although I think most modern speakers are shielded.

I have also heard of noise coming from certain things plugged into the same outlets or even certain inputs plugged into the receiver. I would try to unplug everything you can nearby the receiver and unplug all of the inputs and see if you can isolate the problem.

Get a ground lift for the reciever, start there.

Next I would check the wires on on the speaker. Did you say any speaker you plugged into the center channel hummed? Take some canned air and blow out the pots used to plug into the center channel.

Humming on speakers is almost always caused by a bad ground connection.

Is the plug on the Sherwood RD-7500 three pronged? (the third round one being ground).
If it is three pronged, is it connected to an outlet that has the third prong wired correctly?
Some houses do not have them wired..... (bad electrician!).

The reason this may be the issue is some recievers rely on a good ground connection, where others have internal ground circuits and shielding of the DAC's.

Also it may be that the reason is when your old receiver died it took the grounding circuit with it..... (If this is the case I would be worried about your houses wiring)

I thought about grounding issues. But only the center channel has the humming issue. It is two prong plug.

Two prong as in the outlet or the cord?

Also, Do you know what else is on that circuit? As Brock mentioned, things like electric motors and florescent lighting can sometimes put "noise" on the neutral and/or ground wires.

It could also be a grounding issue on that channel of the amp. Maybe worth having fixed?

3 prong outlet and the receiver plug is 2 prongs.

Well I'm impatient and bought another receiver, can always return it.

Does the receiver have a separate grounding connection. I believe most do. If that not connected or connected properly, that may be causing issues.

    Bad reciever.

Replaced my reciever with the Denon AVR-1312. It's nothing special, entry level for 200 bucks. Thanks for all the suggestions.
