Thread: Time for a new headset

Benefits of having an external mic:
1) if your headphones or mic break, the other is still 100% functional (relevant to OP)
2) standalone mics do a better job at capturing sound accurately and with less background noise than headset mics
3) a combination of standalone mic and headphone is cheaper for the same or better sound quality as compared to a headset
Cons of having an external mic:
1) an extra wire over a usb headset
2) less desk space if using a desktop mic instead of a clip-on

Re: Time for a new headset
Hmmm, maybe it's just me, but most players who've used external mics usually have a ton of feedback or it sounds like they are sitting pretty far away. Then you get to hear their clicking, typing, and game noises if they are using speakers. Sure, if you have the mic clipped on your shirt, it wont sound too bad, but I can't imagine it sounding better than a mic on a headset that is literally inches away from the person's mouth... So, for your #2, I have to disagree....

Re: Time for a new headset
I tried external mics, both clip on and desktop and from feedback of other players I've always had better luck with a headset. This comming from a guy that always has background noise due to the comp being located in the living room and kids playing in the background.

I duuno, guess they are too sensitive, then. Chalk that up as a negative; standalone mics require more calibration to properly reduce backgeound noise.
E: I have found that throwing a sock over the mic helps with excess background noise, but that is not a good thing and shouldn't be mandatory to do that.

Re: Time for a new headset
I very recently broke a SB Fatality Gamer Headset... opened the box on my spare of the same and was reminded how disappointed I was with the quality of sound.
So, I went and bought a reasonably inexpensive Logitech G330 Gamer Headset, and I am totally amazed at the exponentially better sound quality from the on ear design headphones are providing.
At less than $ 40.00 I cannot say enough about how good these are, and it didn't hurt my wallet either.

Re: Time for a new headset
You're saying my $90 G35's are not as good a build as a $90 Headset for music only? I hate to give you a reality check but its all based on manufacturer... My old skull candy headset was great, fell apart after a year of hard use... The G35 is 2 yrs now and still like new. Both cost the same. Headsets are only as good as the maker lets them be. I have a friend who bought the G35's for her to listen to music with, she loves the build and sound..
