Money.

They want to use it as a sales/communication tool. Not for gaming and leisure. This is so fucking lame.

So my question now is if it was once primarily a crowd funded project, are they going to continue to sell Dev kits, or are they going to start giving them away to developers now that they are backed by Facebook?

What also sucks is that the original devs, including John Carmack now have to answer to a higher power. I bet gaming gets put on the back burner for a while, unless it is Farmville.

Meh. I bet it'll end up being a fad anyway. Just like 3-D.

lol...It's so funny when my family members invite me to play on Facebook. Granted, they live far away and don't realize I have a gaming computer....but it's still funny. My sister for example, would never ask me to play a FB game.

Possibly, but games like Mirror's Edge would be absolutely perfect for a device like this. Check out this video. I know it is just one guy's opinion, but when I heard about the Oculus, I immediately thought of how you could can really incorporate height and environmental sensations, and games like Mirror's Edge would be one of said games.

I watched two minutes...and while I've never gotten motion sickness from any game, I could certainly see myself getting sick from that. I'd most likely pass, and play the old fashioned way.

Carmack has always been about pioneering gaming technology - if gaming isn't at the forefront of Facebook's agenda I'll bet he won't put up with their crap if he has to answer to them. The silver lining there being that maybe he'd return to ID? or do another startup at least

I doubt he'll return to ID. He hadn't done much there even years before he left.

3d is no longer a fad.
