    Taking a step back...

I play this game to relax and have fun. I obviously prefer to win, but never cared much if I lost.

But lately the fun has been gone. There's moments, and there are times where I enjoy the company as much or more than the game. But the fun and relaxation that I used to get from this game just doesn't seem to be there any more.

Part of that is people that may or may not be better than me knowing FOR CERTAIN that they are. They know the game backwards and forwards better than anyone else out there and when you don't do something EXACTLY the way they believe it should happen, you get sighs, or complaints or outright berated. This isn't a new thing and most of the time before I used to just let it slide off my back. Keep having fun and play the best you can, right? That's what I always told people to do. Don't let the game get to you. Do your best and follow a caller if you have one. If you don't, try to hit together as SI and stay together as SV and it's all good.

I used to LOVE to play the tank. People can tell you that I used to run around and throw rocks and hit with the most of the time. "Nobody dodges my rocks!!!" was my tank battle cry. It was probably my favorite part of the game. Now... I get the tank and more often than not I let it pass. I don't need the grief that comes with not getting a wipe or doing well at least. Let someone else take the heat.

And that whole mentality it affecting my play I am certain now. I used to know when to hit. Where. When. Timing was good and I wasn't missing half my pounces, charges, etc. I was, as often as not, one of the first picked when we were picking teams. Now, I hesitate. I miss half my hits. I was never great in a horde but now it seems that I'm getting hit even when I shouldn't be. I was even the fat kid once lately. That stings but someone has to be obviously and there are a lot of good people playing now.

It also seems that others have forgotten how to clear (including myself at times). In the last half dozen games I've played I've lost a full health pack no less than a half dozen times. That shouldn't happen. Either people are getting lazy, or the SI are getting that much better. And I don't think it's the latter. I always told people that that was their primary job. KILL THE SI. Nothing else mattered as SV. And it appears that people have decided that isn't the case any more or something. I don't know.

I'm rambling now, but suffice it to say that I'm no longer having fun or relaxing when I go to play a game. I've been playing continuously without break (can't think of anyone else that has here, but I'm sure I'm probably wrong about that) since mid 2008 when the demo came out. And I think it's time to take a step back and play it a bit less. I don't see myself walking away from it entirely yet. But I just don't think I can do the game every single night and 3 or 4 on saturday and sunday any more. At least not for now. I need to find something that will replace that fun and relaxation that I haven't been getting for the last 6-8 months.

So... invite me... and I might play, but as often I might not.

Krakkens and shit. stop tempting them.

I hear ya. For some reason I usually dont get mad in l4d, maybe a second or 2, but it passes pretty quickly. As frustrating as both the game and the players can be, it just hasn't really gotten to me, but I've also only been playing for like 1/5 the time that you have. I think that ever game, no matter how good, does have a burn-out rate, and when you reach that point, you have to be aware enough to realize it's time to take a break before you reach the point where you just never want to play the game ever again.

I hope that you rest up and then come back renewed and ready to "rock."

    Re: Taking a step back...

I'm going to say something that I've had on my mind for a long, long time now, that I've purposely been holding back, but it needs to be said. And this is not directed at only Kanati.

There has been a passing of the torch in our L4D2 community. All the original players that played L4D and L4D2 here at TPG are all pretty much done with the game. Things have changed. Now most of our lobbys have at least 1 "newer" player in them. That changes everything. We rarely get the 8/8 lobby with all regulars who know what they are doing. And even still, we have regulars who are learning the game and trying to get better. That is my explanation for players not clearing horde, not being able to clear SI, playing tank like shit, etc, etc.

In terms of what you, Kanati, were used to dealing with when playing back in the day with all the OG TPG L4Ders, the plain truth is a lot of them didn't understand the mechanics of the game. They understood the concept of going in together and some places to hit from that worked for them, but there is a lot more that they don't understand. You're going to hate that I say it and not even listen, but if you want to see how the game should be played (if you're looking at it from a competitive standpoint ie wanting to win), then go watch confogl.

I play the game to have fun, but I also want to win every game. That means players shouldn't be dicking around and not trying to win. I have much more fun executing hits and covering my teammates, then not doing so. I also understand that the confogl community is mostly pricks, but I don't care. I understand these kids have no lives and play the game 24/7. They know the mechanics better than you, I promise. They know where to hit, better than you. At TPG, me, Hocus, Blitz, Thorsen, Pimp, Ira, any of the top players, are seen as the best of the community. In confogl we are all shit. In a TPG game I can skeet hunters, level chargers, pop boomers, etc etc. In a confogl game I can't do any of that, because those players are that much better than me and understand the game that much more than me.

I have taking what I've learned from confogl and implemented it into TPG games and TPG players, and it works. Me and Shen were just talking about it the other day. Ira was playing and with at least 2 tanks he just went in without SI support. I ALWAYS tell my team to get 3 "capper" SIs ,then push tank in, get one corner and THEN attack with SI. Still people do it wrong and the tank dies. But when people actually listen and go in when they are supposed to it's a wipe.

Some of the OG tactics are the same as confogl, but a lot of them are not. They aren't effective and there are better ways of executing hits and scenarios. You are stuck in your ways Kanati, caused it worked for you in the past with less experienced players. I know you won't cause you despise confogl, but go play for a couple months. Play through the assholes and bullshit, but actually listen to what they have to say and how they play. You will see that it is much more effective, I guarantee it. But I know you won't and same with the others that I see complaining time and time again.

It's really sad to see so many mature players be so stubborn about confogl. You are a great player Kanati and one of the few that I sincerely enjoy playing with, but you could be so much better if you opened your eyes to newer and better tactics in L4D2.

Lastly, I just want to say that I look past this stuff when it comes up. Everyone has their opinion and are entitled to it. Listen to what I have to say or don't, I could care less. I'm still going to play this game and enjoy playing it no matter what happens. I have disagreements in-game with friends about tactics, but still try to work together and find a middle ground. But there is definitely a common sense to the game. Don't go in with tank with no support, don't go in by yourself as an SI unless you are ditching, don't rush ahead as a SV, and many others that people still think are good tactics, but if you actually thought it through and were playing a smart team would seem like crazyness. And that's why many of the things that you think work, worked for you in the past, because you played with non-experienced players who could have easily countered your tactic if they knew the simple thing to do.

I know you won't be gone for long and I will continue to spam you with invites like I always have.

There really is no pressure. It's the players who have played the game and for some reason still don't know what to do that have the pressure. Ask any of the new members of the L4D2 community that we have rebuilt. We teach newer players and have a blast doing so. If you want to play the game the way it was meant to be played, then you will for sure have a good time. If you want to play to go wonder off and look for clown zombies and take in the view, then you probably won't have a good time because of all your teammates yelling at you.

But I understand what you're saying. Some gamers aren't cut out for this game.
