Ok guys, for those who know that your CPU is good enough and you know your graphic card should be able to handle the game and still gets the black screen, I was up all night yesterday trying to fix it, I tried re-installing the game, "sams" fix the windowed mode fix and all that crap, none of them worked for me. So I entered it and took everything back to defaults, and boom restarted my PC and I could play the game flawless no more black screen!

So I suggest you download RivaTuner and install it and just to be sure go into the "driver settings" -> "forceware detected" you should be able to click at the end of it -> "customize" and in the little window that appears you will need to enter in two things the first one is the "DirectDraw and Direct3D settings" once in there go into "shaders" tab and change to force the graphic cards to "force 2.0" or what ever is the highest since the game requires 2.0 pixel and vertex shaders!

And on mipmapping have it on a higher number drag the bar to between 1.1-1.5 that should be done for that window, press ok and exit it.

Now I told you before it was two windows you needed to enter. The second one is the "Open GL" one in this window in the first tab adjust it so the slidebar also is around 1.1-1.5 do that and you should be done just press ok and exit everything, now restart your computer and give it a go, this worked for me and I think it might work for those who say that your graphics/computer should be able to handle the game but doesnt. So try it out might be worth it!

Just do a google search for RivaTuner I recently have the 2.24 version running. You dont need to have RivaTuner in the background to be able to play, it just modifies your graphics and you can exit it after you are done.

try going into your CFG folder and delete a file called VIDEO.TXT, then restart the game and see it if works.

Use your Windows Explorer (right click on your Start button and choose Explore) and go to this folder:

C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\left 4 dead\left4dead\cfg

The VIDEO.TXT file should be in the CFG folder.
