okay, I have had the EXACT same problem.
But only with the 3rd and 4th campaign.
When I try to play them in single player, they load, but the map graphics are incomplete, parts of the envirement are missing and there are clipping glitches all over the place...

I just completely uninstalled the game and then did a reboot. Now I reinstalled it and am updating the content via steam as I'm typing this message... What more can I do ?!

I'll keep you posted in... let's say... half an hour

Okay, this error message is when the server runs custom maps (perhaps also other custom content) that you don't have. L4D doesn't support downloading of custom content from the server (yet) so this is why you get the error message. Most likely it's the other VS maps, you can grab them from:

OR it could mean you've edited some files and they don't match the servers.

Yes it works!
SO:
- delete all l4d game content (and I mean EVERYTHING)
- reboot
- reinstall l4d
- update it through steam
- play and have a good time
