Guide to playing as the tank
1) Be sneaky
Some people think tanks are immortal. Only to face a horde of autoshotties in the face. Instead one should sneak up on the survivors. Press control and get behind them really stealth like. You'll huff and puff but they'll think you're somewhere else. After all, a tank couldn't possibly be in stealth mode. That's when you wack Zoey really hard in the back. Once the girl is down, the other survivors won't have the will to live.
2) Throw rocks
People insist that No Mercy Chapter 1 is difficult when facing a good tank because they can just slam cars into your face and incap you. While this may be true, some pros have already adapted to this strategy by avoiding such cars entirely and running back to the alleyway. Therefore, tanks, too, need to adapt and begin to throw rocks from the roof. You see, while throwing rocks seems fruitless, doing it off the roof will cause some major confusion among the survivors. Francis will stare at you muttering, "I hate rocks". Bill will curl up into fetal position instinctively retelling the horrors of Vietnam. Louis and Zoey will be making out too much to notice. That's when the rest of your team attacks them while they're vulnerable.
3) Hide
The key strategy here is to run up to the survivors and smack them a few times. Then, run away and hide in a room somewhere. This creates a strange psychological effect where the survivors recognize there is no longer a danger nearby, but become hesitant to move from where they are. Fear strikes their hearts and they abandon all hope. They all huddle up and wonder when the tank will reappear... maybe there? Around the corner...? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH! Shut up Francis, it's a rock. "I hate rocks". Eventually, the team will recover, but they'll be wary. At every corner. For the rest of the level.
Finally, they'll make it to the end and the safe room has been caved in by forty cars. Success!

I haven't thought of the crouching thing to cover up the rumble effect of the impending tank attack.
I think the idea of losing control of the tank to one of your teammates is daunting and you want to be star of the show.
But I'll try to convey this to my friends when we're playing together.
WELL PLAYED SIR!
