I have the solution for the first one:
comment or delete the content of this text file to prevent the video from loading:
D:\Left4Dead\left4dead\media\StartupVids.txt
I've also find many font files in D:\Left4Dead\platform\vgui\fonts but I don't know which one is the menu font. I would like something creepier.

I've just found the intro screen. It's inside pack01_dir.vpk, in the folder materials/console and it's called background01.vtf and background01_widescreen.vtf
--
Psyk, if I have understood you well, I could extract the vtf from the vpk file, then load the vtf with vtfedit, extract the image in .tga format, modify it, paste the edited version, save the vtf with the same name, place it where the vmt indicates, and the game will load that instead of the content of the vpk? That's what I've just done and doesn't work. This is the vmt for background01.vtf:
UnlitGeneric
{
$basetexture "console/background01"
$vertexcolor 1
$no_fullbright 1
$ignorez 1
$nolod 1
$SHADERSRGBREAD360 1
}
So, I've browsed to the L4F folder, then to the materials folder, and there's not a console folder there, so I've created. I've pasted the edited background01.vtf there and that's all. What's wrong? In case my edited vtf could have any problem, I've tried with an untouched vtf extracted (a different screen), renamed it to background01.vtf and placed it in the same folder, just to see if it's loaded, and nothingI've also tried placing the .tga, and the file with no extension.

EDIT:
I've been reading some tutorials about skinning and I've found the way to make this work. You have to edit pack01_dir.vpk with a text editor and remove the references to the file you want to replace. Then you put the vtf file in the place indicated by the vmt. I opened up the file with Ultraedit and looked for background01. There are several instances. I tried deleting many lines but it didn't work. I find one line full of garbage but with a reference to background01 that I deleted and then the game said it could not find the screen.

There was also a squared pattern like a missing texture when loading the main menu. It seems that the file gets corrupted when edited in text mode. What I finally did and resulted successful, was to open the file (remember to back up yours) and edit it directly in hex mode. I found the line and simply changed de 'b' in background for a different letter so that the game could not find the image and then looked for it in the materials/console folder. Now, it displays my title screen and the rest is ok too.
