Game freezes at random points and monitor input goes away

I can make it through about a level and a half before my game freezes, sound loops, and all the input to my monitor goes away. I have to restart my comp because ctrl alt delete doesnt work anymore. Any solutions?

You mean mat_queue_mode 0 it turns off cpu multicore rendering via the game (L4Ds implementation of it doesn't work so you'll gain fps by doing it) and the optimizer will enable it at the software level below the game.
