    Hi mytheral. I am also experiencing the same problem as heechae. I have tried the methods above but it doesnt seem to work for me. Do you have other solutions to this problem?

    If that doesn't work cut not copy the ..\steam\common\left 4 dead\left 4 dead.exe out to your desktop (don't close the folder yet) and after you do that try to run the game, it will fail, then move left 4 dead.exe back to it's folder and the game should work for you.

    Is it strange that I can't find the file you're referring to there? I downloaded L4D via Steam a couple days ago, and have had the same problem as described in the OP...tried everything Steam suggests (virus scan, disable security programs, reset steam, reinstall etc...) to no avail. It's gettin annoying...

    It should be there. You can make a file with that name, steam_appid.txt and all it should have in it is three characters:

    500
