Jacks: Do you have the latest version of your video card driver? That usually smooth things up. But be aware of that L4D apparently have some issues with the 180.xx versions of nVIDIA. 178.xx are fine. (This is IF you'll get some problems with freezelags etc after updating your drivers).
Can't really think of anything else that can cause this problem. It is most definitely a video card (memory) issue - no doubt about that - so don't go messing around with anything else now. =)
Perhaps you'll need to buy a chassi-fan to cool the entire chassi down even further. Also note that it's not obvious that opening the chassi-door makes the computer cooler. Sometimes (and most often) a closed climate is preferred where the air circulates in predefined routes in your chassi.
Good luck mate!

Hey Jacks. I have almost the same problem as you. I tryed realy long time to fix this problem because I love l4d to much. But tell me your graphic options. The only way I fixed my issue was to use medium graphic, then I can play l4d without any problem.
One more thing, you tryed to play css? Does the same thing happens there? Or any graphic bugs?

I don't know what the problem is specifically, but in Fallout 3.. sometimes after killing a creature or scavenging the bodies, they would glitch and the screen would turn into lines just like that. Then I updated the game, didn't work... reinstalled, update drivers. All of them didn't work.. then I got a new graphics card and I haven't experienced a problem.
