They can often still hear the boomer coming.

If it's coming from any length they could normally see and shoot it, half decent survivors will hear it and shoot it. That's all I was saying :P

It might buy occasional success but the chances are slim that the smoke cloud will be thick enough at that one point they won't hear it in time to react either to make a difference. I can count the number of times a smoker's cloud has made it hard to see incomings on one hand.
