It doesn't say it isn't confirmed, it just says the picture isn't real, which was kinda obvious.

They're just saying the picture is a prank...just the picture...just the picture...I'm sure they just mean the picture...they couldn't possibly mean there won't be a cricket bat..could they?...no no...

Yup. I took the liberty of emailing Gabe if the cricket bat was real or a hoax and he said it was real.

The picture is obviously fake so I reckon it's still in development, but think about it; the picture contains an infected wearing an Australian shirt getting killed and the escapist is an Australian based company. They're just butthurt.
