Making movies is an incredibly complicated endeavor. It's not as easy as you seem to think it is. Sure some movies have been shot without a full script (Jurassic Park 3) but it's not common practice - and there was always a partial script for the cast to work with.

Bottomline: if Paramont, Universal, New Line or any other company bought the rights to L4D we would have known about it. It would have been splashed across news sites - "NEW LINE EXPRESSES INTEREST IN POPULAR ZOMBIE SHOOTER" or "PARAMONT TO DEVELOP ZOMBIE FILM BASED ON HIT GAME TITLE".

Even if a small, unknown independent company acquired the rights we would still know. It wouldn't be a secret. This isn't Cloverfield, after all.
