That Uzi sure helps me get a ton of headshots though. I use it everytime until the T2 weapons pop up. Then i go Auto-shotty. The regular shotgun has too long a reload time and too long on fire rate. I can usually get 1st in headshots by using the Uzi.
I guess i'm voting for Uzi here...

I always take the Uzi. Sometimes I'll take the pump but in 95% of the cases, I'll take the Uzi. I always play with the same set of friends and they all take the shottie so I take the Uzi for the range issue.
I also just prefer the continuous rain of bullets over the single hits of the shottie + the shottie has a terrible reload time.
For that same reason, I prefer to take the AR while my teammates will take the AS.
And then last but not least, when there's a Tank, I have the feeling the continuous spray of bullets actually slows it down.
I'm happy I have shotties/autoshotties in my team though. They're great to mow down incoming zombies, I keep an eye out for distant infected.

I tried the pump shotty a few times this morning just to see what all the fuss was about. I don't know if it is my play style but I just can't play with this thing effectively.
Let me ask you pump shotty users something; I hear you all talking about taking down hunters in one shot when they are pouncing survivors. How the hell are you doing that? I can stand nose to nose with a hunter and put up to three shots in him and he just won't die...I'm better off just melee spaming... Is this normal or do I just fail at aiming this gun? I don't have these problems with the autoshotty...

I used to strictly stick to the shotgun.. tier one and two. Now, I find I am taking the longer range weapons, either Uzi or the AR, more often then not.
I got sick of not being able to shoot targets at range.. like a pesky smoker up on a ridge or something. When I first switched, it was a whole new learning curve.. but now I'm used to it. The trick is, and it has been mentioned in this thread already, is to aim for the heads.. especially in a horde event. I find you can mow down a horde pretty effectively if you get used to aiming for heads in a tightly packed horde.
I also had to get used to watching my ammo more closely. It is amazing how fast you can chew through your ammo with the Uzi and AR. That was part of the learning curve as well. Short, controlled bursts will reap better results in the end.. even though every inch of me was screaming to just let loose like a action hero.
But.. I will always switch to a shotgun if needed. I also find that the 2:2 ratio, that was mentioned already, works the best.. at least in the games I have played in. Some times, for tactical advantages, we split into two person fire teams .. one shotgun, one automatic each team. It helps in some situations if your going to set up shop from two different areas.. corners, stairwells.. all depend on the map.
