Problem with audio de-synch when merging demo video files

This is more of a general encoding question rather than a specific L4D issue.

I've been putting some speed run videos together for youtube which are requiring me to merge several separate chapter videos together to make a single video. Everything goes fine with the individual encodes, but when I try to merge the files with virtualdub (or even random avi joiner programs), the audio desync slightly after it goes past a join point. It's not a major desync, but even a half-second is very distracting.

I'm recording game demos through console, after which I play them back and record avi's with fraps. Then I've been appending the files with virtualdub and encoding them in xvid format. Whether I compress the audio to mp3 or leave it uncompressed, I still get the same problem.

Has anyone else encountered and solved this problem? Also, what is the optimal way to encode and join demos if this is not it. I'm more interested in quality than speed.

I have had problems with that kind of thing in the past. There are lots of tutorials out there that show different processes for fixing it, but I usually ended up using my video editing software and just dragging the audio track the .5 seconds in the appropriate direction. Not the correct way to do it, but it works.
