How about instilling gun battles into l4d series? There will be military, survivors and of course, the SI. 3 factions. It will only be like one or two campaigns like that though. It somewhat makes game more intense. and instead of 8 players on versus mode, there will be twelve. I've even came up with a story line. Check out my thread for more info.

And the new SI: The original SI will still be around, but there will be some addition.
-The Knight: In a sense, it's kinda like the Jockey as they both riding on something, except it will be riding a tall infested man (not as big as Charger or Tank though.), and it's main attack is attacking the survivors and the military with a scimitar-like hand and deal a good 20 damage. Its secondary attack will be punching from the tall infested man. Its strength is that it will not die if the infected he rides get killed. It will just hop off and running around slicing survivors with its scimitar hand, unless the survivor got accuracy and killed the Knight while he's riding, then they just have to deal with the common infested. Its weakness is that it will be a bit harder to control the direction.
-The Chameleon: This is a good SI if you're into the whole camping thing. It has a slightly longer tongue than the Smoker and drain health faster. The biggest strength is well, as the name suggested, it can change color according to its environment, making it hard to spot unless your eyes sharp enough to see that the wall doesn't look right. However, once it opens up its fanged mouth to attack, things will go a lot more clear. Its weakness is its weak hp. It can be killed in a few rounds. It definitely aint no tank.
The Stoner: This slow moving, fat SI re-defines chemical weapon. It's like a combination of Boomer and Smoker. While it doesn't blind and attract infected like the Boomer, it will blowing smoke into survivor's and military's face and make them move significantly slower for a certain period of time. It has a weak health, which serves as a strength and weakness, as it will release smoke that slow down player upon its death.
Uncommon Infected:
-Terrorist Infected: Contacted in the Guantanamo (Check my other thread for more details). These infected will blow up once it's been shot.
-Sniper Infected: A fallen military sniper and a victim of the Green Flu. It doesn't snipe like what it used to do prior to infection. However, it wear ghillie suit and hiding in grassed and dark area, lying on the ground. It will run into survivors/military once it's been contacted.
-Mobster Infected: A former Mafia member that survivors contacted in Miami and Havana. It's pretty much like the common infected, except it hit harder.
-Farmer Infected: Contacted in a coconut plantation in Cuba. These former Cuban farmers will hop off from the coconut tree and attack the survivors from the side. Be careful when you're under a coconut tree.

Valve never ruled out L4D3, they've been asked recently about this..
Left 4 Dead 3 Possible "Down The Road" - IGN
they ain't working on anything now but it's not final that L4D2 is the last of the series. There are tons of rumours that Half Life 3 is going to happen, not confirmed but it looks like it will happen. Total dif game but if they go down that road with HL I don't see why they wouldn't with L4D considering the popularity. Valve is a bit wierd though, they don't over milk games for the sake of making money which is a good thing but considering how long it would be between releases I don't think we would mind

I agree. However I don't think it would be milking the game if so many people want it (if milking is what they are afraid of) so I think they can safely procede in making another sequel. I think milking comes when a series gets overhyped on purpose, and then tons of crap merchandise gets made exploiting every possible niche until people get sick of it. Halo is at risk of this (and I like Halo) but I don't think L4D would be.
