    Red face L4D offline impossibility

I am so glad to be a member of your group.
I bought L4D over a month ago (full version,pc) and have gotten to play it twice. My problem is that I'm on a dial-up modem, so immediately after purchase I had to go to another home to get the game installed, register with Steam, and finally I got to play L4D. A couple days later my Steam program took over and forced me to go online for updates-even when I unchecked their auto-update box. On my dial-up modem it says over 7days to do whatever it is doing so that I can play again. I found that I can pick up unsecured wireless (barely) if I set my computer by another window. So I do that and Steam says it will take over 4 hours to finish updating or whatever, then I can play. Before that time comes I get a message about Steam servers being busy and to try later. So I have to start over and over and have not been able to play L4D since.
All we want to do is play L4D single player. Not online and not lan-for the time being. Please can anyone walk me thru what I should be doing differently.

    L4D Problems and Errors

Post in that forum for help. Although you might find this thread moved there by the time you come back to check it.

It has been a long time since I've been a PC gamer but I feel your pain as I too had to deal with dial-up for a looooooong time. Do you have a friend with broadband who would be willing to share his connection with you for a little while?

Are you able to get Steam started at all?

And if so, are you able to click on File > Go Offline?

    Offline play only

Yes I can connect to Steam. I have clicked the start offline area and it says game not ready to play offline. I have also clicked the auto update box. All I want to do is play offline single player with my best friend. Is there a way to have L4D installed so that we can play offline only without having to keep being forced to update? I can move the computer to one of my other windows and it will pick up unsecured broadband but Steam messages always pop up saying servers are busy. We would like to play again tonite. What am I doing wrong? System is quad core 2.4, 8 gig ddr2 ram, ATI video card (over 1 gig).

If you can successfully get the computer to go to offline mode, then you should never be prompted to update it again.

I would suggest you connect to the internet via whatever means, let the game get updated, no matter how long it takes, and then try the offline mode again.

I just updated recently, so the servers must not be as busy as they were.
