I unfortunatly can't answer that question, because I have no idea. I'm just going off of personal experiance. When I had a connection similar to you, L4D1, Halo 3, ect. worked fine, L4D2 doesn't (versus and scavenge modes only, campaign is fine). Then I get a connection that is over six times faster, and there is no lag what-so-ever.

Unfortunately it is an expensive fix, and I could be wrong, so I would try everything else possible first.

Its not Valve's fault if your connection cant support their game.

Does this happen with other games you play?

What router are you using and who is your ISP?

    This.

And, really, you can't be mad at Valve, because in this day and age an 880kbs connection is relatively slow.

Just a heads up, a 6mbps connection in my area (NC) costs around $37 a month, a small price to pay for perfect online gaming.

i can be mad at valve, when every other game i have works perfectly and most of them like halo can have up to 18 people playing at once i really cant see why there should be a problem with 8

Port Forwarding Xbox Live 360 on the Netopia 2247NWG-VGx

Try opening your ports with this tutorial.
