L4D2 Freezes, reboots to 600x800 and 4-bit colors
Hello all,
I have looked over the guides and done a lot of searching online regarding this problem, but I have yet to find a solution that works.
Starting a few days ago, whenever I play L4D2 it freezes on me and I have to force a restart. It never freezes when I am exploring the menu or playing the intro cinematic, only after I have joined a game do I freeze. It's usually 3-5 minutes after I have started playing.
When I restart, my computer boots up at 600x800 resolution, and 4-bit color. I cannot fix the problems by changing the settings in Display. Sometimes, my video card kicks up and error and apparently doesn't work. When this happens, I have to delete and reinstall the drivers. If this doesn't happen, I just have to boot into Safe Mode, then shut down, wait a minute, then restart, and the resolution is fixed. But L4D2 keeps freezing.
I have played Plants Vs Zombies with no problem, but I haven't attempted other Valve games.
I have made sure L4D2 is up to date.
I have verified the integrity of the game cache. The first time I did this, Steam found 6 missing files, and downloaded them, but that did not fix the problem. I verified the cache several times after that. No missing files were found, but the problem was not fixed.
I have defragged the cache files.
I have NOT deleted and reinstalled local content yet.
I have verified that my video driver is up to date multiple times.
Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? I figured deleting local content was the next step, but I wanted to make sure other options were exhausted before I did that.
Thank you for your time!

This sounds like a pretty severe video card failure. Have you tried swapping out video cards (if you've got a spare)? I don't think Plants vs Zombies is going to really be a good test for video performance, because it's relatively non-taxing in terms of video. Try running a 3d benchmarking program and set it to loop, and see if your system fails then. My guess would be that you're experiencing some sort of hardware failure associated with the game, and your reboot symptoms point towards a problem with the gfx card becoming unresponsive.

Thanks for the quick replies.
It seems to randomly happen, but it's always 2-3 minutes after I've started playing, and it's only after I've joined or launched an actual game. I messed around in the menu area for 10 minutes one time, and then just let it set for half an hour at the menu screen and nothing happened. But the moment I start an actual game it freezes 2-3 minutes in.
I will look into running a 3d benchmarking program. Thanks for the suggestions! Unfortunately I don't have a spare video card (though I have a bad feeling I might be needing to get a replacement soon).
