I did this achievement last night with friends
it made the game much more interesting and exciting. Instead of dropping it all the time to shoot, however, i held it the whole time, including the finale. Also, the fact that we did it on expert was even more interesting... but worth it for bragging rights :4
BTW, if on a team of others and the gnome is rescued, everyone on the team gets it. Hurray for Gnome Chompski!
