I dunno if a versus mode would work

You'd need to disable the motion sensor for sure.

And then there's the alien class layout, it isn't exactly common and then 4 specials.

This has probably already been spotted and posted somewhere, but in the swarm_english.txt there are descriptions for different gametypes/modes. And also a possible training map and other stuff.
