Re: So is SC2 worth it?

Played all the __craft games since the release of Warcraft: Orcs and Humans. Basically bought these like crack as soon as they were released. Fairly sure I am still going to buy this very soon, but I have hesitated and here is why.

Release of one campaign at a time
Currently with the shift of SC2 releasing each campaign as a single set, I find the potential cost too high to jump on board right off. Though I don't know if I am willing to wait for the others to be released and bundled into a battle-chest. It's a difficult wait (I love these games)

    No LAN
The lasting power of all these games has been Multi-player. My craft buddy and I would always start with LAN. For some strange reason they have removed that in this release. LAN provides weeks/months of testing each other out, and learning how to do everything entirely wrong. It makes, when teaming up to go WAN, a much better starting point to adapt. We get rather competitive with Arranged Matches and ladders, and I'm really disappointed they've took out the LAN aspect for our own 'work-outs'.

LAN also provided a multi-friend private tournament or FFA when either Battlenet or the connection was down. It's fun to all play in the same room. I imagine though arranged matches still exist and we can create these private games -- when the internet connection is doing ok. Just why remove LAN? It's beyond me.

Neutral Hostiles in MP / Heroes
Though many would disagree vehemently, I was really hoping for a shift towards WC3 style. Heroes and large map pacing with Neutral hostiles (aka Creeps). It just added an entirely different level of risk vs reward. It allowed for more versus strategies, and although some map designs created one dimensional attacks, (SoS was one of those maps), most were quite balanced out. My friend and I had many different early game plans. Which was influenced by more than just map size/layout, and race combo. You had to consider difficulty of expansion due to hostiles and distance, reward of higher level heroes and special items, hero combos to grind through small 'greens/yellows'. Economic factor of surplus gold generated by creeps. Starcraft 1 was made during the typical formula of scout, hit and run, counter. However this is still fun, it just feels less personal.

Now with all that said, I am still probably going to buy this soon. I watch all the demos of matches and get pretty excited. The campaigns in all the series never disappointed me and I do not expect this one will either. The map editor looks to be improved even 10 fold, and I found the WC3 one awesome. So I look forward to the possibilities there as well.

It is worth the cost? Depends what you like, but if you liked SC1 and got thousands of hours of play from it, than I would say absolutely.

    I feel you Greyvee.

It does suck that they are only rolling out one campaign at a time and I was going to have the same plan as you... which is wait for a sale or wait for the bundle, but unfortunately it's just not worth it. It will take too long for a sale to roll around and years before the bundle comes out. Saving a couple of dollars just isn't worth the lost time.

The no LAN feature also sucks. I was planning to have a huge LAN party at my place.

I think they have no heroes and neutrals for the hardcore competitive players. I wish they had two game modes: one vanilla for the hardcore SC1 players and one with neutral creeps and heroes like WC3 style.
I broadcast gaming videos on Twitch TV and my finished videos are on YouTube! Recently I shoutcasted the Counter Strike Tournament at PAX Prime 2012!

SC? Pfft, at LAN parties you busted out the booze, UT2k4, and fired it up with zoom instagib, slow motion death, quad jump, super berserk, and low grav mutators active. Good times, good times...

Well of course there was booze, duh. We did SC parties, AVP2 parties, BF 1942 parties.. some parties we did pretty much anything goes.. some would be playing CS (the halflife 2 mod, not the game), while other SC, or Quake 3.. all kinds of stuff.
