Re: Bad spitters are my new pet peeve.
I didn't literally mean it has never worked. However, from my experience it rarely works to try and "block them off with spit." These tactics seem to be more gimmicks than solid attacks.
Any experienced player will be able to distinguish and make a judgment call when the situation has arisen. Say that someone gets charged around a corner. You block off the corner with a spit. If the person who is charged goes down, I'm likely to wait for the spit to dissipate. However, is someone gets hunted and is close to death, it would be more effective to just walk in the spit briefly, freeing the hunter and taking optimal damage overall. If you get out of the spit quickly, you barely take any damage at all.
In closing, it can be effective to use spit in unorthodox ways, but most of the time you'd be better off with a standard setup. Call me old fashioned, but I prefer solid damage to risky, gimmicky attacks.
EDIT: A good example of a spit that doesn't involve comboing would be on a ladder. If you stand on top and spit the bottom of the ladder, you can get some solid damage. Aside from that, there's little benefit to artillery spit.Last edited by Knee of Justice; 07-31-11 at 03:26 AM.

Re: Bad spitters are my new pet peeve.
Kanati, I wasn't talking about splits or any of these other hypothetical situations. I'm talking about blocking. When people say "I'm blocking them with my spit." I always think "Why?" "What purpose could we possible have for making the SV's stay static for less than 10 seconds that is worth more than hundreds of potential damage points?"
As to Brock's point, and Kanati's point, Bob said it best. This isn't about hypothetical rare situations where I have already agreed a Spitter can be used "outside the box" to great effect, just like all SI can from time to time.
But that is missing the point. We don't tell Hunters to run around scratching and not pouncing, we don't tell smokers to always get close and go for an insta smoke, we don't tell Boomers to always hold their spawn until they can get a charger a recharge.
These are all examples of situational things someone can do with an SI when they have experience under their belt, and know when to do these things. But just like you don't teach a rookie pilot how to do inverted barrel roll-back flips before you teach them how to take-off and land, you don't teach a new player about all that bullshit until they understand the fundamental mechanics that will give them and their team the greatest average damage in VAST majority of cases.
Once you understand and can fluidly use a spitter in the fundamental manner of spawn, spit, block, die. Then you can move on to understanding advanced and situational tactics.
