    The price of games...

Games these days are costing quite a few million dollars to develop these days.

I think the Halo series is estimated to have cost around $25-$40+ million

Killzone 2 is rumored to be around the $60million mark :eek::eek:

Gears of War they say cost only $10million.... Valve spent that just on their advertising campaign for L4D

    But are they worth it?
I know a lot of time goes into the project and many programmers and developers end up sacrificing their normal life styles for years....but do you think when you play the game that it feels like a multi million $ production?

Visually games these days look amazing, but i feel sometimes that quality has not evolved the same way, and when i hear about how much money has gone into developing i ask myself 'is the money you spent justified?'

Sure this cut-scene looks great but...was it worth it?

what do you think about the the money going into game development and the end result?

I still look at games as a better value for money form of entertainment than movies. It's pretty rare now for any major movie to cost less than $20-40m and for what... two hours' worth of entertainment. Now look at the Halo series. Even assuming you only played the games once, cleared them and never touched them again, you're still looking at about 10-15 hours' worth of entertainment in the campaign modes alone, and then you've got the multiplayer modes.

The main issue I have is that with this massive increase in budget is that a lot of games are starting to become very samey and contrived. I rented both Killzone 2 and Resistance 2, and graphics aside, it was like playing the same game - the storylines were tacked on as an afterthought and there was nothing in either game that really struck me as original or innovative about either game. Unfortunately, this problem is only going to get worse.

Yeah i totally agree with you about games all being the same now. Everyone has ran out of ideas - hence why all of a sudden the massive influx in re-releasing old games but with a make over on Xbox Live Arcade and Playstation Network.

The same is actually happening in the movie scene aswell... a load of sequels and prequels are being made because we have seemed to have hit an imagination stump!...which is quite a sad thing.

I too think that even though the gaming market is still one of the biggest industries in the world its close to falling on its arse, and spending so many millions now to try and get a cut above the rest is only going to back fire in the developers face...

...ubisoft being a prime example of this.

Sure Killzone looks AMAZING, and the rag doll physics are some of the best you will see for a while....but i could live without seeing a body slump up against a wall when you kill them like the would do in real life if it meant the developing team could use the money in a better section i.e the actual game itself ;)
