Go to your desktop and right click on an empty space. Then select properties. In one of the tabs there should be a dimension thing. Change that to 800x600. ;)
I'm an idiot and I can't follow directions. So now I'm also banned.

Half-Life 1 uses a modified version of the Quake 1 engine. With that engine you could define certain game factors in the command line - such as memory heapsize, and screen resolution. But I dont know how that will work with Steam.

If you can start HL1 from the Start - Run windows button, you can define the width and height of the game.

It would look something like this, c:\program files\steam\half-life\hl1.exe -width 640 -height 480

That would force the game to play in 640 X 480. Unless those options and commands were removed from the Quake engine during the development of half-life 1. But I dont know how its going to work with steam.

And that's where I can help.

Go to your Steam games list, right click on Half-Life and select 'Properties'. In that dialogue, click 'Set launch options...' and enter what doom guy said (-width 640 -height 480).

I am going to guess that your problem is now fixed? And did the game run with the screen resolution set in the options?

Yes problem solved. I dont know about running the game because I just opened the game and I could see the options menu so I'm pretty sure the problem is solved now.
