The idea is to design the "aircraft of the future," as in to theorize what types of planes will be flying in 20, 30, or even 40 years. We take into account possible developments in technology and materials, and then apply them to designs that otherwise couldn't work given the limitations of today's world. Then, the company keeps those drawings in storage so that in 20, 30, or even 40 years, when they get contracts from the government for new designs, they'll already have a head start or at least have some ideas as to what they can do. In theory.

And of course, on rare occasion, a design is good enough that a prototype is ordered. That hasn't happened since I've been there, though. But it's what I aim for.
