    CS:S Trigger Happy Admin

While I don't think my topic really concerns admin ABUSE, I do think this is the most appropriate venue for my gripe.

I just spent the last hour or two playing on a half-full server. I'm not going to name the admin I'm about to bitch about for two reasons: 1) I'm not 100% sure who it was. I have my suspicion, but it is just that--a suspicion.

During the last few maps there have definitely been some noobs, which tends to mean some folks don't follow the call as much. And when I say noobs, I don't mean individuals new to the server... I mean individuals new to the game. The two individuals I'm thinking of clearly had some FPS experience, but were just new to the game.

Here's my gripe. If someone is new to the game and/or server... be more patient with them. It's one thing if they refuse to participate, but if they are just falling behind because of the learning curve... let them be! ESPECIALLY WHEN THE SERVER IS ONLY HALF-FULL! (I would give more leniency if the servers were full and it was quite a competitive match.)

    Let me give two examples:

    1) We were on Lost Temple and there was someone who wasn't following calls at all. The admin warned him once or twice and then he started typing that he didn't know what we were talking about. He typed that his friend had just told him to get CS:S. Well after a round or so of talking to him, myself and a few other players instructed him on how to turn on his mic so he could hear the calls. Once he did that he was very inquisitive about the calls. He wasn't rude or interrupting, but you knew that he still didn't know the calls. He was asking questions and attempting to play by the rules. Well... the admin warned him a few more times with the final warning stating that it was his final warning before being banned. The poor fella ended up just quitting out.

Sure this isn't the end of the world, but, admins, please give a little leeway to people when you can tell they are trying. ESPECIALLY WHEN THE SERVER IS ONLY HALF-FULL!

    2) The next example was just now on season. The person didn't have a mic but could hear the calls. On a couple instances the guy ran the wrong direction calls like "first two out of spawn fake mid to A, one rush lower, the rest walk lower B." Now calls like this make perfect sense to those familiar with the game, but this guy was a noob (like the first guy). The only difference was this guy would type out his question (in a moderately reasonable amount of time, all things considered). Well... this guy was getting warnings from (presumably) the same admin as in the first instance. A few rounds into the map this dude ended up with the bomb. We all rushed into B and this guy couldn't plant the bomb. After everyone was yelling at him to plant the bomb, he typed out "How do I plant the bomb?" This player was BANNED before that round ended. As far as I could tell it was a permanent ban. Folks.... the server had probably 7 people per team. Here we had someone who was TRYING and was banned?

Come on... is someone a little trigger happy?

(*Deep Exhale* Okay... my bitching is done.)

Update: I just hopped onto the same server for another hour and saw several other people get banned for things I wouldn't normally see them get banned for. These bans were only 60 minutes, so they weren't as bad. (The aforementioned ban MAY have been 60 minutes, but I don't really recall.)

See the thing I see here is, say you have one noob who doesn't know what the hell he's doing and the call is "2 fake A, everyone else outside B". This noob rushes B blowing up the call, and causing the T's to lose the round. The whole point of all TPG is for teamplay so if you have someone messing up a team, new or not, a ban needs to be iniciated for the sake of the team.

Negative. No, no and no again. If your team knows they have a new player, they either need to scale back the complexity of the calls, or better explain what those calls mean to get the new player up to speed. THAT is what teamplay is, not banning someone new because they do not know the call.

We are looking into this, Legal.

Point taken, but here like legal said after multiple warnings what can you do? But I understand your point of helping them out with the calls, that's always needed. I was stating how after warnings, an attempts to explain, and there still messing up the team as a whole.

an admins job is not to ban new people just because they dont understand what the call is. And regs shouldn't be jumping down a new players throat as well because they dont know that the call is. We are here to TEACH team play, not be power hungry idiots that ban players for no reason what so ever. Do your best to COMMUNICATE with the newer players and help them to understand what the calls are, maps, etc. THAT is the essence of being a true team player and something all regs should strive to be.

Like I said in my original post, I don't really know if I'd consider this "abuse." I'm certainly not trying to get an admin in trouble, it's just that this is really the only venue (that I know of) to voice such concerns. There is a fine line between someone who simply isn't playing as a member of a team and someone who is new to the server (or the game). I realize that it can be hard to tell the difference sometimes, especially if the admin is on another team.

It isn't about getting anyone "in trouble". It's about making a great admin team better. We absolutely want to hear this kind of feedback, as we can all learn from it. If there is a problem, we want to fix it. Thank You for speaking up.

Not going to lie I have lots of league / lan experience. But when I switched to source I became a noob and TPG is the type of place I liked most due to the fact everyone I met was so friendly and people do have patience I still dont know everything about Source as I do 1.6 and I have never even played some of the maps that TPG servers play but its a learning game no one come out, just knowing 100% what to do what to call.

    Re: CS:S Trigger Happy Admin

Legal, I spoke to the admin in question, as well as other witnesses. There were some factors that led to these bans, but mainly it was due to not having as much information on some of the players as you did, as well as being on alone for some of that time and trying to admin both teams (which can get hectic depending on the situation). As a result he mistakenly punished where he would not have had he realized it was due to inexperience and not tom-foolery as to why it seemed some of these players were not with the calls being made.

Thanks for bringing it to our attention, as at the very least it's a learning experience for us all.

    Finding: No abuse.

    Resolved.
