Don't blame WoW. Blame the legion of Faux gamers who don't want anything new and would rather buy shameless clones that are subpar.

tl;dr, matrix online shut down, star wars galaxies got cloned into WoW format.

No they'd followed the leader before WoW. Which was Everquest. Which sucked near the end.
