It's extremely useful to be able to identify specific players at a glance.

I prefer hats that are subtle instead of obnoxious. Hats that don't even fit with the art style of the game or sometimes even change the silhouette of the character are pretty dumb, in my opinion. It's Enchanted Broccoli Forest time!

Re: Are Hats entertaining?
Hats are fine, no matter what shape or color, people just like to use them as a scapegoat for what they don't like about TF2.
The reality is, the game is not the same one that they paid for back in 2007. It's become more of a TF2.5, we're more or less waiting for Valve to stop experimenting with unlocks and features so they can release the next game in the series. Hopefully they'll rarely add anything to TF3, just fix some bugs here and there and occassionally add maps and non gameplay affecting items.

Also Valve can't count to 3.
But seriously, they'll put out TF3 once they stop making HUGE amounts of money from TF2 with barely any work(Workshop anyone?) They don't even have to make the items anymore. They have so many reasons to keep people with TF2 and not many to move on to TF3 other than a tech inprovement.
